Making history, Globe Telecom, Inc. is the first Philippine publicly traded company to have its near-term and net-zero science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction objectives validated and approved by the Science-Based Objectives Initiative (SBTi). By coordinating its operating strategy with the global urgency to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, consistent with the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the UN-backed Race to Zero campaign, this milestone highlights Globe's commitment to climate action.
A key component of Globe's strategic integration of sustainability into its core operations is the SBTi's confirmation of the company's aims. As the first firm in the Philippines to do so, Globe committed to the SBTi's Business Ambition for 1.5°C in June 2021, placing it at the vanguard of corporate environmental responsibility. Based on a baseline of 2021, Globe targets a 42% decrease in absolute Scopes 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2030 and a 25% reduction in absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions within the same time frame. Long-term, it has set an even more challenging goal: from a baseline of 2021, it wants to reduce absolute Scopes 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050. “By acquiring this validation for our targets, we're not just adhering to our core values of responsible business conduct, we're also carving out a path for other companies in the Philippines to follow. We hope that we can inspire and catalyze a broader shift towards sustainable practices across industries, fostering an inclusive future where the country’s business community thrives in harmony with the planet,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer. With 27 sites already powered by renewable energy, Globe's complete strategy to reach its science-based aims includes a shift towards renewable energy as well as the investigation of alternative energy solutions, including solar hybrid generators and onsite solar panels. The company's dedication to reducing its environmental impact is further demonstrated by the implementation of over 9,000 green network solutions. In addition to these technological developments, Globe has taken steps to involve its supply chain in its sustainability activities. Two such initiatives are the introduction of a supplier code of ethics and the incorporation of sustainability standards into supplier evaluations. Globe's sustainability journey places a strong emphasis on setting high goals as well as the necessity of accountability and openness. In order to ensure that its journey towards sustainability is marked by integrity and excellent corporate leadership, the company pledges to regularly disclose to the public its progress towards reducing emissions while also abiding by the standards and recommendations of the SBTi. Globe has set an example for ethical corporate practices in the midst of global environmental issues with its commitment to integrating sustainability into its operations. This shows how corporate accomplishments and environmental stewardship can coexist.
