Globe Telecom and Nokia Install a Cutting-Edge Sustainable Antenna in South Cotabato, Philippines

In South Cotabato, Globe Telecom recently installed Nokia's cutting-edge Interleaved Passive Active Antenna (IPAA+) radio system. In order to support the leading Philippine telco's ongoing network growth and improvement of mobile services for its clients, at least 50 installations are scheduled for this year, with the first being completed today.

​Nokia developed the IPAA+ for Globe as a high-capacity, low-footprint, sustainable 4G/5G antenna to provide seamless site upgrades throughout the nation.

The IPAA+ is a compact solution that uses cutting-edge antenna interleaving technology to save about 1.5 meters of tower height space. Most importantly, it doesn't add to the tower's wind load, which expedites site acquisition and facilitates quicker and simpler deployment. Because tower reinforcement and construction are usually not required, there is less of an impact on the cell site during site modernization and 5G implementation.

​In comparison to traditional antennas, the 2.6 GHz IPAA+ variant showed a 5% increase in efficiency during its world-first testing in Tantangan, South Cotabato. Moreover, the IPAA+ has the benefit of supporting more end users since it permits a larger coverage area.

Nokia's Vice President of Sustainability, Subho Mukherjee, said: “Nokia is proud to partner with Globe and support their efforts to deliver the most sustainability-driven network in the Philippines. Through this unique IPAA+ variant, we are supporting Globe’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint as well as accelerate its 4G/5G rollout across the country to improve the connectivity experience of its customers. We will continue to work closely with them throughout deployment at approximately 50 additional sites this year in the Visayas and Mindanao islands.”

​During the Energize 2023 summit, which aimed to instill an energy-conscious culture among Globe employees and its value chain, Globe's partners displayed a number of devices, including the IPAA+.

By deploying it, Globe is demonstrating its dedication to implementing green network solutions in line with its goals of reaching net zero by 2050 and halving global carbon emissions by 2030. Currently, 25 of its high-energy-use buildings are powered by renewable energy.

Globe pledged in 2021 to establish science-based goals under the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), and in June 2023 it submitted its science-based goals for assessment and approval.

Its commitment to supporting the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and maintenance of a CDP 'B' rating since 2021 demonstrate its commitment to mitigating climate-related risks.

At the most recent Environmental Finance Sustainable Company Awards 2023, Globe received recognition in four categories: Large Enterprise of the Year in APAC, Sustainability Reporting of the Year in APAC, Net Zero Progression of the Year in APAC, and Energy Efficiency Initiative of the Year in APAC.
