Amazon to Invest Up to $4 Billion in Anthropic; Announced Strategic Partnership for Advance A.I.

​Amazon will match the earlier partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI by investing up to $4 billion in San Francisco-based AI company Anthropic.

By combining their respective industry-leading technology and expertise in safer generative artificial intelligence (AI), Amazon and Anthropic have announced a strategic partnership that will hasten the development of Anthropic's future foundation models and make them widely available to AWS users. As a result of the deeper cooperation:

• To design, train, and deploy its future foundation models, Anthropic will leverage AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips, taking advantage of AWS's affordability, performance, scale, and security. Future Trainium and Inferentia technology will be developed in cooperation between the two businesses.
• For mission-critical workloads, including safety studies and the creation of a future foundation model, AWS will take over as Anthropic's main cloud provider. Anthropic intends to use Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the vast majority of its workloads, giving Anthropic access to even more of the premier cloud provider's cutting-edge technologies.
• Through Amazon Bedrock, AWS's fully managed solution that offers secure access to the best foundation models in the market, Anthropic commits to giving customers all around the world access to future iterations of its foundation models. Additionally, Anthropic will give AWS users early access to special tools that allow for model customization and fine-tuning capabilities.
• Amazon will contribute up to $4 billion to Anthropic and own a minority stake in the business.
• Through Amazon Bedrock, Amazon developers and engineers will be able to build with Anthropic models, enabling them to use generative AI in their work, improve current applications, and design entirely new customer experiences across all of Amazon's companies.
