Megawide Construction Corp. has secured the contract to design and construct a new Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) at the Caticlan Airport, gateway to Boracay Island, which is owned and operated by Trans Aire Development Holdings Corp. (TADHC), a subsidiary of SMC Infrastructure. “This will be another exciting opportunity for Megawide – to be able to work with one of the country’s largest and oldest conglomerates, San Miguel Corporation (SMC), and help realize its vision of a world-class facility at Caticlan Airport. We hope to impart our engineering excellence and be able to integrate our sustainable methodologies to this landmark development,” said Megawide CEO and Chairman Edgar Saavedra.
SMC, through SMC Infrastructure, has been keen on developing major airports in the Philippines, which includes the Godofredo P. Ramos Airport in Aklan Province, more popularly known as Caticlan Airport. The conglomerate is also undertaking the development of the New Manila International Airport in Bulakan, Bulacan, and the rehabilitation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila. “Our search for a partner-contractor who shares our vision of modernizing airports in the country has concluded with our partnership with Megawide. We believe that Megawide’s track record of building key infrastructure through efficient and sustainable practices will help us deliver a worldclass facility within our committed deadline,” said Ramon S. Ang, chairman and CEO of SMC. Earlier, Ang mentioned that SMC Infrastructure wants to complete the new PTB in “less than three years” to welcome more tourists to Boracay and other nearby destinations. Ground-break for the new terminal is eyed by December 2024, or before the year ends. Megawide, known for its vertically-integrated engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) operations, complemented by a Precast and Construction Solutions (PCS) business, is expected to provide efficiency and environmentally-friendly processes throughout the development. Megawide is among the most innovative engineering and infrastructure companies in the Philippines. Publicly listed since 2011, Megawide is the private partner of the Philippine Government for major public infrastructure projects such as the PPP for School Infrastructure Project Phases 1 and 2; the multi-year developments of Mactan-Cebu International Airport and the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange; and the construction of Clark International Airport. In 2012, the company established Megawide Corporate Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization focusing on social development projects. SMC Infrastructure operates the nation’s most extensive toll road network, including the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX), the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR), South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), the Skyway System, and the NAIA Expressway (NAIAX). It is also building the game-changing Manila International Airport in Bulacan. |
