The DOE has awarded a Hydropower Service Contract to Repower Energy Development Corporation (REDC), a Pure Energy Holdings Corporation subsidiary, for the development and construction of a seawater pump storage hydropower project in Real, Quezon. Real, Quezon, will soon house a 320 MW seawater-pumped storage hydropower plant constructed by REDC. Following a Memorandum of Agreement ("MOA") with Austria-based Gugler Water Turbines GMBH ("Gugler") to create seawater pump storage generation facilities throughout the Philippines, this development is being built.
As per the MOA, the initial project will be situated in a region of Luzon. This project will be situated at an altitude of approximately 300 meters above sea level. The lower reservoir will draw water from the shoreline indefinitely. Funding for the pre-feasibility study and first activities will be provided by REDC using funds generated internally. “The development of a seawater pumped storage hydropower facility in Real, Quezon shall be the first of its kind in the Philippines, thus allowing the company to be a pioneering force in this particular area of clean energy.” Eric Peter Y. Roxas, President and CEO of REDC said. The world's first pumped-storage facility to employ seawater for energy storage was the hydro system for pumped storage located on Okinawa Island, Japan's northern coast. The power plant used the Philippine Sea as its lower reservoir and was a pure pumped-storage operation. Repower Energy Development Corporation (REDC) is a 100% owned subsidiary of Pure Energy Holdings Corporation. REDC is renewable energy developer of run of river hydropower projects through a "clustered approach method" where several projects are in a target area providing for shared economies of scale through common infrastructure, reducing the cost of development and improving the bottom line.
