San Miguel Corporation (SMC) and Ayala Greenfield Development Corporation (AGDC) have broken ground on the Ayala Greenfield Interchange, a vital infrastructure project that will boost connectivity and economic growth in Southern Luzon. The groundbreaking event was led by SMC Chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang, AGDC Chairman Joselito Campos, Jr., and Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Chairman of Ayala Corporation and Ayala Land.
Key government officials, including Department of Transportation Undersecretary Andy Ortega, Department of Public Works and Highways Director Pelita V. Galvez, and Calamba City Mayor Ross Rizal, attended the milestone event, emphasizing the project's significance to regional growth. AGDC, a joint venture of Ayala Land Inc. and Greenfield Group, is the developer of Ayala Greenfield Estates, a 550-hectare upscale residential complex in Calamba, Laguna. The Ayala Greenfield Interchange will be a bidirectional infrastructure that connects the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) Toll Road 3 (TR3) to local roads, improving access to both SLEX and the STAR Tollway. This increased link will allow for easier travel between SLEX and Sto. Tomas, Batangas, and alleviate traffic congestion in strategic locations. Once SLEX Toll Road 4 (TR4) is built, the expressway will extend 67 kilometers to Lucena, reducing travel time between Sto. Tomas and Lucena went from three hours to 45 minutes. “We are proud to partner with Ayala on this project. This is part of SMC Infrastructure’s larger initiative to improve and expand our southern tollways network, particularly the South Luzon Expressway. By the end of the year, we expect to turn it into a 6 x 6-lane expressway. With this, we can better support and sustain the long-term growth of the CALABARZON region,” said SMC Chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang. The interchange's strategic location on the TR3 section of SLEX puts it as a critical gateway, connecting Metro Manila to southern Luzon while also driving economic activity in the area. With the current building of SMC's SLEX-TR4 and future plans for TR5, this project will play an important role in an enlarged transportation network spanning 542 kilometers, improving access to crucial provinces such as Quezon and Sorsogon. Beyond its regional influence, the Ayala Greenfield Interchange will provide direct advantages to the local community. The junction will drastically cut travel time and improve access to key urban centers such as Metro Manila, Alabang, and Nuvali. Ayala Greenfield Estates and its neighboring communities will be able to commute to commercial centers, schools, and recreational locations more quickly and conveniently. “We are not simply breaking ground on a new infrastructure project; we are laying the foundation for enhanced connectivity and growth, enriching the lives of the communities that we serve,” said Ayala Corporation and Ayala Land Chairman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala. “The Ayala Greenfield Interchange is a symbol of our shared vision to build a better and more vibrant future for the City of Calamba, for this generation, and for generations to come.” The interchange will provide direct access to Ayala Greenfield Estates, a residential neighborhood developed by AyalaLand Premier that illustrates the company's dedication to providing sustainable, high-quality living environments. Nestled amidst the picturesque grandeur of Mt. Makiling and Laguna de Bay, Ayala Greenfield Estates provides homeowners with a peaceful lifestyle enhanced by world-class amenities and easy access. It also houses the Ayala Greenfield Golf and Leisure Club, an all-weather championship golf course with 18 holes and a par of 72. The junction would save travel time for inhabitants commuting to Metro Manila while also streamlining routes to key services and recreational areas in the vicinity. “This interchange is more than an infrastructural development; it is a beacon of progress and opportunity,” Mayor Rizal for his part said. “By addressing the growing number of vehicles and visitors that flock to the Resort Capital of the Philippines, we are not only easing traffic congestion but also paving the way for economic growth and enhanced connectivity.” Construction of the Ayala Greenfield Interchange, which is set to begin in November 2024, demonstrates the public and private sectors' commitment to delivering meaningful infrastructure that matches the region's expanding demands.
