The Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), the flagship operation of International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) and the Philippines' largest and most advanced container terminal, is continuing to invest in infrastructure improvements, equipment upgrades, and digital transformation to increase capacity and improve terminal efficiency. These improvements promote increased trade volume and improved customer service. To address increased demand, MICT is building Berth 8, which will accommodate ultra-large container vessels with a capacity of up to 18,000 TEUs. This will increase capacity by 200,000 TEUs, bringing the total volume handling capabilities to 3.5 million TEUs annually. Additional yard area will accommodate the extra berth while also improving yard use for greater mobility.
MICT's sustainability plan includes the continued use of hybrid and near-zero emission (NZE) equipment for its operations. The port recently installed eight NZE rubber-tired gantries to supplement its fleet, which is currently 83 percent hybrid. Plans are being developed to buy electric trucks and construct EV charging infrastructure, furthering efforts to minimize emissions. The ICTSI is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions per container transfer by 26% and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Gate operations have been simplified with 14 automated lanes and six optical character recognition (OCR) portals. These improvements have lowered the average truck stay time to 47.82 minutes, while the pre-truck manifestation gate transaction has been reduced to only 48 seconds. Additional new equipment deliveries include 43 terminal trailers, 17 skeletal trailers, and 11 tractors. Meanwhile, a new yard management system optimizes container stacking, increases visibility, and reallocates resources to alleviate bottlenecks. MICT has implemented digital solutions to improve service efficiency, such as the ICTSI App, which allows for real-time vessel, container, and truck tracking as well as billing computation and electronic exchange receipts. E-wallet payments enable automatic fee deductions, which speed up import clearance and gate-out procedures. SMS messages are being used to notify truck drivers of container hold releases and truck instruction documents at the gate. Truck drivers may now enjoy free WiFi connection within the terminal. MICT's expansion and modernization activities are consistent with the country's economic needs and goals. These further underline the terminal’s central role in the country’s logistics and supply chain resilience as well as its prominence as a gateway for global trade. MICT, the country's busiest container port, has continuously ranked among the world's most efficient terminals. Continued investments in infrastructure, technology, and sustainability demonstrate its dedication to providing world-class service.
