Terra Solar Philippines Inc. (TSPI), a unit of MGEN Renewable Energy Inc. (MGreen), signed a Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Supply Agreement with Huawei International, Pte. Ltd. (Huawei) to deliver the latest BESS for the MTerra Solar project. To date, this is Huawei’s biggest BESS project for an integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) and BESS facility. The agreement covers the entire 4,500 MWhr capacity of the MTerra Solar project. This collaboration reinforces the Philippines' potential to be a global leader in renewable energy innovation, with MTerra Solar set to become the world’s largest integrated solar PV and battery storage facility.
Huawei’s expertise in large-scale renewable energy projects is exemplified by its work on the Red Sea New City solar storage microgrid in Saudi Arabia. Spanning 100 kilometers of grid infrastructure, this independent microgrid operates entirely on solar energy and battery storage, delivering over 1 TWh of green electricity in its first year. The project exhibits Huawei’s capability in providing advanced energy solutions. Huawei brings its cutting-edge expertise in energy storage to the MTerra Solar project by equipping the facility with state-of-the-art BESS. The system includes containerized batteries and essential auxiliary components such as fire suppression systems; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; battery management systems; power conversion systems; and energy management systems. It will also include step-up transformers to connect to the 34.5 kV busbar at the main substation. These systems will allow MTerra Solar to store excess electricity generated during low-demand periods and supply it back to the grid during peak demand, ensuring a more stable and resilient energy supply. With safety as a top priority, the battery system will include a two-stage DC/DC and DC/AC architecture and provides constant active power output, even under high-voltage ride-through conditions. This is in addition to the rigorous testing that all Huawei batteries undergo to ensure durability and reliability in a wide range of operational scenarios. These measures guarantee the highest level of safety for the battery system while maintaining optimal performance. “By combining MTerra Solar's vast solar power generation capacity with Huawei's cutting-edge energy storage solutions, we are creating a powerful synergy that will optimize grid operations, ensuring a consistent and uninterrupted power supply,” said Emmanuel V. Rubio, President and CEO of Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN). “This capability not only enhances grid stability but also enables the seamless integration of variable renewable energy into the national energy grid,” added Dennis B. Jordan, President and CEO of MGreen. Spanning Central Luzon, MTerra Solar will combine 3,500 MWp of solar PV with 4,500 MWhr of battery, capable of supplying clean energy to over two million households. The project recently broke ground in Nueva Ecija, signaling progress in developing this historic facility. It is set to begin commercial operations in phases, with Phase 1 scheduled for February 2026 and Phase 2 following in February 2027. MTerra Solar reflects the shared commitment of TSPI and Huawei to sustainability, innovation, and energy independence for the Philippines. Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN) is a leading power generation company in the Philippines key subsidiaries, Global Business Power (MThermal), MGEN Renewable Energy, Inc. (MGreen), and PacificLight, a modern and efficient Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility in Singapore. It is the power generation arm of the Manila Electric Company (MERALCO), the largest private electric distribution utility in the Philippines. |
