ICTSI's Australia Unit Invests in New Hybrid Carriers to Raise Capacity, Reduce Emissions

Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT), an International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) operation at the Port of Melbourne, Australia, purchased four new hybrid automatic container carriers (ACCs) from Kalmar to increase capacity and reduce emissions.

The new carriers, which will be delivered in 2025, will each have a twin-box lifting capability of up to 60 tons and Kalmar's cutting-edge hybrid technology, which includes lithium-ion batteries for energy recovery. This technology contributes to a 40% boost in energy efficiency and a 50-ton CO₂ reduction per carrier per year.

"We value our partnership with Kalmar and their technical support," said Bruno Porchietto, VICT chief executive officer. "These new hybrid carriers are part of our expansion plan, which will increase our capacity to 1.5 million TEUs annually. This investment demonstrates our commitment to customer focus, innovation, and sustainability, ensuring we can meet the growing demand for our services while minimizing our environmental impact."

VICT is the only completely automated container terminal in the Southern Hemisphere. It runs seven remotely controlled ship-to-shore cranes (five super post-Panamax and two ultra post-Panamax, the largest ever in Australia), 17 ACCs, and 26 automated stacking cranes. All cranes include energy recovery systems, which help the port meet its energy efficiency and CO2 emission reduction targets.

This investment comes after VICT had a milestone year in 2024, handling its five millionth TEU since launching in 2017. To service its expanding customer base, the terminal continues to expand its technical capabilities.
