Globe Telecom recently conducted a successful end-to-end satellite SMS client trial in a rural location with poor reception in Zambales, marking a significant milestone in the company's mission to provide connectivity in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs). In the groundbreaking test, Globe transmitted text messages using normal phones via Globe and TM SIMs via Lynk Global Inc.'s low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites—a significant step forward in providing dependable and inclusive connectivity.
The historic trial is the first time conventional mobile phones on prepaid and postpaid accounts have connected directly to a satellite to deliver SMS. This is especially important in the Philippines, where numerous areas stay separated due to the archipelago's distinct geological structure. The live demonstration, held in a movable blackspot in Lake Mapanuepe, Zambales, used Lynk's cutting-edge "cell tower in space" LEO satellites, which deliver direct-to-standard-phone global connection in collaboration with Globe. The test, which used a variety of mobile devices, demonstrated that direct-to-phone satellite communication can be achieved without modifying existing devices, allowing for widespread availability and affordability. The unique success demonstrates Globe's commitment to increasing service, particularly in rural and neglected areas where traditional cell tower construction remains challenging. "This is a significant step in our mission to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that every Filipino, regardless of location, stays connected to the world," said Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe. "By leveraging Lynk Global's low-earth orbit satellite technology, we are breaking barriers and bringing the next wave of solutions to the remotest areas, allowing families, travelers, and businesses to stay closer than ever.” Globe will conduct another testing in Mindanao this month under various settings to solidify its adoption of this unique technology. The company intends to completely integrate this technology into its network in order to serve more GIDAs. Globe presently operates in over 500 GIDAs around the country. Globe has continually taken the lead in introducing cutting-edge technologies to the country. This client trial is merely the beginning of the company's plan to include satellite-based communication into its services, reinforcing its position as a technical innovator in the Philippines.
