As part of its continuous commitment to sustainability, ACEN, through ACEN Shared Services (ACES), has made a key step toward responsible electronic waste (e-waste) management by transferring its e-waste to Integrated Waste Management (IWM), an AC Logistics subsidiary. This program, a first for the Ayala Group, is part of ACEN's broader circularity efforts to reduce waste and minimize environmental effects. IWM, in collaboration with ZOLO Philippines, a company that specializes in sustainable IT asset processing, will ensure that the e-waste obtained from ACEN is repaid, reused, refurbished, recycled, or resold, reducing the amount of e-waste disposed of and carbon emissions generated to a minimum. ACEN recycled e-waste, which comprised used computers, laptops, displays, keyboards, and printers.
E-waste has emerged as a major global challenge in today's digitally connected society, posing significant environmental and health risks. The Global E-waste Monitor 2024 lists the Philippines as one of Southeast Asia's top e-waste generators, alongside Indonesia and Thailand. According to the monitor, Filipinos generated 537 million kilograms of e-waste in 2022, which equates to nearly 5 kg per person. Zeeshan Pervez, president of ACES, said: “Our circularity efforts are rooted in the belief that we must rethink how we manage resources. By transforming our e-waste into reusable and recyclable materials, we not only reduce our environmental footprint but also create opportunities for sustainable development. This is one of many ways ACEN is integrating sustainability into our operations and ensuring a positive impact on the planet for future generations.” Joseph Anthony Quesada, head of commercials at IWM, said: “A significant amount of value is lost when electronics and electrical equipment are not properly managed at the end of their use. Through this partnership with ACEN, we can ensure that these assets are given new life by being redirected into sustainable, circular value streams. Our goal is to make this a long-term initiative with ACEN, driving positive impact for both the environment and the business.” This initiative strengthens ACEN's position as a leading renewable energy firm in the Philippines and Asia Pacific, demonstrating a visible commitment to sustainability that extends beyond clean energy generation. By incorporating circularity into its core operations, ACEN is not only addressing the worldwide e-waste challenge but also establishing a strong example for the industry.
