AC Health, the Ayala group’s leader in high-quality healthcare solutions, through the Healthway Medical Network, is taking a bold step towards sustainability by transitioning its medical facilities to renewable energy. In partnership with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES), the retail electricity arm of the Ayala group, six Healthway Medical Network facilities will now be powered by ACEN’s wind, solar and geothermal energy sources. This marks a significant milestone in AC Health’s ongoing commitment to both sustainability and high-quality patient care.
The first facilities to make the shift include Healthway QualiMed Hospital Santa Rosa, Healthway QualiMed Manila, and Healthway Cancer Care Hospital. Healthway Cancer Care Hospital, located in Arca South, Taguig, is the Philippines' first specialized cancer care facility and is EDGE certified. Other facilities transitioning to renewable energy include Healthway QualiMed Hospital San Jose Del Monte (Bulacan), Healthway Daniel O. Mercado Medical Center and FEU-NRMF Medical Center in Quezon City. Paolo Borromeo, president and CEO of AC Health, commented: “This partnership with ACEN RES represents a pivotal moment for AC Health. Both of our companies are dedicated to innovation through sustainable practices that help make healthcare more affordable and accessible for Filipinos. By embracing renewable energy, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also doing our part to ensure a healthier planet for future generations. We are continuously improving our integrated waste management practices to reduce environmental impact across all our operations.” This shift to renewable energy underscores AC Health’s commitment to environmental responsibility and patient well-being, especially in light of the growing evidence linking environmental pollution and climate change to numerous health issues. According to the World Health Organization, climate change is a driver of diseases such as asthma, heart disease, mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue, and even cancer. Eric Francia, president and CEO of ACEN, said: "Our partnership with AC Health exemplifies how renewable energy can enhance essential services like healthcare. By powering AC Health’s facilities with clean energy, we are reducing their environmental impact while supporting their mission of improving health outcomes. This collaboration reinforces our shared vision of creating a more sustainable future for the country.” By switching to renewable energy, AC Health's facilities are projected to avoid an estimated 68,360 tons of CO2 emissions throughout the contract period—equivalent to the amount of CO2 absorbed by approximately 3.1 million trees in one year. The collaboration between AC Health, through Healthway Medical Network, and ACEN RES, reinforces the Ayala group’s dedication to sustainability. By integrating clean energy into its healthcare operations, the Ayala group continues to set the standard for responsible business, driving positive environmental impacts while delivering world-class healthcare services. Ayala Healthcare Holdings, Inc. (AC Health) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Ayala Corporation that aims to provide every Filipino accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare. Its portfolio includes Generika Drugstore, the pioneer in generic retail pharmacies, IE Medica and MedEthix, a major pharmaceutical importer and distributor, Healthway and QualiMed, a network of multi-specialty clinics, ambulatory centers, and full-service hospitals, and KonsultaMD, a healthcare aggregator app that offers online consultations, medicine delivery, and clinic and diagnostic booking. ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES) is the retail electricity supply arm of ACEN, the publicly listed energy platform of the Ayala group. With a rapidly expanding presence across the Philippines, Australia, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, and the U.S.A., ACEN is leading the charge in the renewable energy transition. The company currently manages a substantial 4.8 GW of attributable renewable energy capacity, both operational and under construction. With the Philippines as its home and priority market, ACEN is fast-tracking the expansion of its renewable energy portfolio to align with the nation’s decarbonization goals and meet the increasing demand for clean energy. Currently, the company’s domestic assets include 1,850 MW of solar, wind, and geothermal capacity. ACEN is committed to delivering clean, reliable, and affordable energy across the Asia-Pacific region. The company has set an ambitious target to increase its renewable energy capacity to 20 GW by 2030. As a pioneer in sustainable practices, ACEN is spearheading initiatives for the early retirement of coal plants and has pledged to achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
