Aboitiz Power Corporation decommissions Cebu diesel unit

Aboitiz Power Corporation (“AboitizPower”) was advised by its subsidiary, East Asia Utilities Corporation (EAUC), that the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP) confirmed that effective October 30, 2025, the 12.400 MW Diesel Generator Unit 1 of the EAUC Bunker C-Fired Diesel Power Plant located at Mactan Export Processing Zone 1 (MEPZ 1), Barangay Ibo, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu will be deregistered from the IEMOP system. Prior clearances from other concerned bodies such as the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) were also secured, in accordance with the DOE’s Implementing Guidelines on the Decommissioning and Mothballing of a Generating Plant. EAUC completed the process to decommission and deregister the asset today.

The decision by EAUC to seek regulatory approvals for the decommissioning of the plant was made after a technical incident in May 2024 which, following extensive evaluation by EAUC management, rendered the unit no longer viable for repair or continued operation. The other three (3) generating units of EAUC remain unaffected by the decommissioning activity.

EAUC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of AboitizPower, which began full commercial operations on May 25, 1998. EAUC owns, operates, and maintains a Bunker-C fired power plant in MEPZ 1, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, serving its capacity to MEPZ 1 and the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).
